Refresh Your Routine: Treat & Moisturise

Refresh Your Routine: Treat & Moisturise

Here we are, the final two steps of a basic skin care routine revealed. If you’re just joining us now, check out part one and two of this series to get up to speed. There’s no point starting your routine if you haven’t even prepared your skin! Today we are exploring why a serum is the star of your skincare routine and, in a sea of beautiful moisturisers, how to choose the right one for your skin. By the end of this series your routine should be refreshed, and your skin should be singing from the rooftops.

Step Four: Treat

If you consider cleansers, toners, and moisturisers to be the building blocks of a basic skincare routine, then Eminence serums are the golden pillars, blinding everything in their path. Sound dramatic? As someone who’d never tried a serum before, I thought so. Rae explained that serums are supercharged with active ingredients and will instantly take your routine to the next level. The molecular weight of the serum helps it to sink into the lower layers of the skin and allow you to target specific skin concerns.

To choose your first serum, consider what you’re looking to target. For a specific issue, Eminence’s VitaSkin Booster Serums may be the answer. You can treat breakoutscalm inflammationbrighten your skin tone, or target visible signs of ageing with one of these pocket rockets so choose according to your skin concern. The concentrated dose of vitamin-rich organics delivers dramatic and targeted results with daily use.

It can feel like there are too many serums to try and too little time. Eminence has a large range of unique and powerful serums; it can be tempting to want to use everything at once. Rather than haphazardly layering a mixture, Rae recommends starting with one serum and measuring your results.

"One bottle should last around three to four months. Once it’s done, then reassess. Is there something else you would like to target or are you now devoted to that serum? Or maybe you want to add another to the mix?"

Of course, we can’t overlook the lovely range of Eminence concentrates. But how is a concentrate different? Does using a concentrate replace the need for a serum? And is the Lavender Age Corrective Night Concentrate as dreamy as it sounds? So many questions. Rae explains that a concentrate is powerful like a serum but has a slightly richer texture and is generally more hydrating on your skin. You can use both a serum and concentrate before moisturising, but it’s honestly up to you.

My favourite Eminence product is the Bamboo Firming Fluid (no coincidence its initials are BFF) which has an instant tightening effect on the skin, while boosting collagen and elastin production – this is a must have for any mature aged skins!
Its night-time counterpart is the Lavender Age Corrective Concentrate and YES – it is as dreamy as it sounds. You get to wake up to velvety smooth, plumped skin
every morning.

Sign me up! To apply, one to two drops of a serum (or pumps of a concentrate) is all you need. Massage into your skin in a circular motion and leave on.

Step Five: Moisturise

Finally, moisturiser… the essential step to balance and protect your skin. Moisturising keeps the skin hydrated and acts as a protective barrier from the environment. Rae says to pick the right Eminence moisturiser, you need to consider your skin type and, you guessed it, your skin concern.

Those with combination or oily skins (despite the silly myth) do still need to moisturise. A lightweight option, like the Lotus Detoxifying Overnight Treatment or Mangosteen Gel Moisturiser, will hydrate the skin and leave a smooth, matte finish. For more mature skins, the Coconut Age Corrective Moisturiser contains coconut oil and shea butter, perfect for restoring and retaining moisture. For something a tad lighter, the Arctic Berry Peptide Cream is great at targeting fine lines and wrinkles. Those with sensitive and rosacea skins can rejoice, the Calm Skin Chamomile Moisturiser soothes and hydrates, bringing down any inflammation in the skin. There truly is an Eminence moisturiser for everyone.

Now, for the big question: can you only use an overnight cream as you sleep? Will the skin police show up if you dare to use the Bright Skin Overnight Correcting Cream first thing in the morning? Rae says breathe easy, it’s perfectly legal to use a night cream during the day. Night creams hydrate and nourish your skin while you sleep, resulting in a bit of a thicker texture than traditional day creams. But if you like to march to the beat of your own drum, add a couple of drops of water to your product to create a lighter texture for daytime use.

Hot tip: your body heats up overnight so your skin loses more moisture as you sleep. This is known as transepidermal water loss. It’s a good idea to incorporate a richer product like an overnight cream in your evening routine to combat this.

There you have it, your new (belated) resolution for 2021. Try sticking to the simple five step routine for twenty-eight days before adding any new products. This will give you a chance to see how your skin responds to new products and get into the habit of your new routine. Keep in mind that throughout life, your skin will change. It’s good to revise your routine regularly to suit your needs at the specific point in time.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to go do everything Rae has told me to try and make up for the years of neglect and abuse my poor skin has suffered! What’s your new year skincare resolution? Have you changed up your routine in 2021? Connect with us on social media and share your experience.
