Beautiful, soft skin does not have to be limited to your face. By adding an exfoliating body scrub to your regular beauty routine, you can have radiant skin from head to toe. Learn more about adding a body scrub to your skincare practice.

What is Exfoliation?

Skin cycles through different stages. As dead skin rises to the surface, it naturally sheds and allows a fresh, soft layer underneath to emerge. Over time this slows and a build-up of dead skin can occur. This can leave your skin dry or itchy. Exfoliating is the process of removing that top layer of dead skin to reveal the new, smoother layer underneath.

What is a Body Scrub?

Body scrubs exfoliate the skin by physically removing the top layer of dead skin. The ‘scrubbing’ feeling comes from salt or sugar that is suspended inside the oil base. Some body scrubs, particularly the homemade scrubs, contain coarse sugar or salt particles. The higher quality scrubs are created with delicate and quality particles that are designed to be gentler on the skin. Body scrubs encourage efficient skin cell turnover and circulation and can help free ingrown hairs and smooth razor bumps. By using the body scrub to mechanically aid this process, impurities underneath can be drawn out, and the skin can be smoothed and polished. This will leave your skin healthier, softer and more radiant than before.

Sugar or Salt?

Different body scrubs use either salt or sugar to create the ‘scrubbing’ feeling and aid in exfoliating the skin.

Sugar can often be a gentler exfoliant as the granules are smaller and rounder than salt. The sugar helps to hydrate your skin and can be a wonderful option during winter to fight the dry air. It is also a natural source of glycolic acid, an AHA, which is an exfoliating essential. Glycolic acid penetrates the skin and breaks apart the bonded skin cells to allow for fresh turnover. This helps generate softer and younger-looking skin. Sugar scrubs are great for dry and damaged skin.

Salt granules are often coarser than sugar, creating the perfect scrub for slightly tougher skin areas such as elbows and feet. Salt has detoxifying properties with trace minerals acting as natural purifiers. This helps to draw out the toxins clogging the pores and to remedy congestion. Salt scrubs invigorate the skin and encourage healthier circulation and skin turnover.

Both salt scrubs and sugar scrubs have amazing benefits for the skin. If you’re having trouble deciding which to choose, why choose at all? You can have the best of both with a combined sugar and salt body scrub.

Introducing the Stone Crop Body Revitalising Scrub

We are excited to present The Oprah Magazine Fall 2019 Beauty O-Wards winner: Stone Crop Revitalising Body Scrub. This new body scrub offers both hydrating raw sugar and mineral-rich rock salt designed to invigorate your skin and keep it silky and moisturized. The body scrub builds into a creamy lather when worked into the skin, and gently exfoliates to unveil the smooth, fresh layer of skin. As with all Eminence Organics body scrubs, it is made entirely of natural and organic products and completely free from harmful microbeads.

How to Use a Body Scrub

When incorporating a body scrub into your beauty routine, it is recommended to use two to three times a week to keep your skin moisturized and healthy all over. Here is how to use a body scrub:

1. Run lukewarm water for 10-15 minutes to soften your skin.

2. Turn off the running water and start to apply the scrub in a circular motion starting from your feet. Work the body scrub up towards your heart to increase circulation.

3. Maintain gentle pressure. Avoid scrubbing too hard.

4. Rinse off the scrub.

5. While your skin is still damp, apply your favourite lotion or body oil.
