Your skin’s acid mantle is a delicate protective barrier designed to keep the skin in healthy balance and keep out dirt and other toxins you don’t want in your skin. Its pH sits at about a 4.5 to 6.5 in a healthy range. People with a higher pH have acne skin, so bringing that down helps to control acne.
If the skin is alkaline it becomes dry and has less antibacterial defence. Causes of alkaline in the skin are using harsh products like soap or cleansers that contain sulphates, the more these products are used, the worst effect they have on the skin. These kind of harsh cleansers make your skin oilier as the skin tries to protect and rebalance itself. The surface of skin also becomes drier as harsh products dehydrate moisture levels. Surface water loss exacerbates clogged and congested skins as the excess oil trying to escape through the pores becomes trapped by the tightening surface cells. Using a natural cleanser free of soap and sulphates will avoid stripping the skin of its natural oils, preventing this dehydration, irritation and excessive oiliness. We often see oily skin that is dehydrated from over cleansing.
Skin that is affected by mild acids can slightly strengthen the skin and assist it to detoxify for example; salicylic acid, glycolic acid and lactic acid, all are AHAs or BHAs. Using these ingredients in their most natural state is the most gentle and effective way to treat the skin causing minimal disruption and keeping the skin in balance.
