As we age, our skin cells divide slower, and the layers of the skin begin to thin. Fat cells beneath the dermis begin to weaken and elastin and collagen fibers loosen and unravel. Skin loses its elasticity; when pressed, it no longer springs back but instead sags and forms creases. The skin’s ability to retain moisture weakens and the sweat and oil‐secreting glands atrophy. As a result, skin becomes dry and scaly and wounds are slower to heal.
Although people may have a genetic predisposition to premature wrinkling, it is well known that external factors such as sun exposure and smoking promote and exacerbate wrinkling of skin. Frown lines (between the brows) and crow’s feet (beside the eyes) develop because of persistent muscle contractions like frowning, squinting and smiling. And don’t forget gravity!
But back to the sun. The role of the sun in wrinkles and skin cancer cannot be overestimated as the most aggressive enemy to our skin. Overall, exposure to ultraviolet (referred to as UVA or UVB) radiation from sunlight accounts for about 90% of the symptoms of premature skin aging, and most of these effects occur by your 21st birthday. Both UVA and UVB rays cause damage leading to wrinkles, lower immunity against infection, aging skin disorders, and cancer. Even small amounts of UV radiation damage collagen fibers. And worse, when your skin is exposed to the sun, cells are damaged and give off free radicals, unstable molecules that cause further cell damage.
SPF skin care protection are some of the topical barriers that can help protect your skin from the effects of solar damage, but the best long‐term prevention for overly wrinkled skin is a healthy dose of antioxidants throughout your daily skin care routine and in your diet. These antioxidants scavenge free radicals in the body so you can prevent further cell damage and protect your skin.
Acai Berry is a new super berry used throughout the Firm Skin range. Otherwise known as the Amazonian palm berry, Açai was shown to top the antioxidant rankings in a study conducted by AIBMR Life Sciences back in 2006 that showed it had the highest ORAC antioxidant value of any food. It also contains phytonutrients, essential fatty acids, Omega 3, Omega 6, Omega 9, phytosterols, vitamins and minerals to help promote skin cell health.
To help the skin retain moisture levels Hylauronic Acid is also used as a key ingredient. Hyaluronic Acid occurs naturally in the deeper layers of our skin and helps to keep it smooth and “plump” through its ability to hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water. It is an anti‐inflammatory and clinical studies have shown that it also helps wounds heal more quickly, and can reduce the appearance of both old and new scars. With its inclusion in this collection, skin is left hydrated, and youthful.
