clean upEvery year over 6 million tonnes of rubbish is dumped into the world’s oceans, 80% of which is plastic, and a further 10% of this being plastic.

Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!
Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!
Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!

We join the chant across our beautiful nation with a timely reminder to DO SOMETHING! Big or small, every piece of rubbish makes a massive difference to our environment, especially our marine life.
Today is Business Clean Up Day, kicking off the Clean Up Australia Day Events for 2014. The program will then roll into School Clean Up Day on Friday 28 February and culminate in the national pride event, Clean Up Australia Day Sunday 2 March 2014.

Starting back in 1989, Clean Up Australia has since grown into our largest community-based environmental event. The success of this event directly benefits the environment, with Australians donating more than 24 million hours over the past 20 years of Clean Up Days – collecting over 200,000 tonnes of rubbish!

Mobilise your business, friends or family into action by cleaning up a local park or greening up your work environment!
You can get involved in any of these Clean Up events by:

  1. Creating or Finding a Clean Up site http://www.cleanupaustraliaday.org.au/join/
  2. Telling Your Friends
  3. Turning Up on the Day

The success of Clean Up Australia Day has grown into an organisation delivering a range of conversation initiatives in Australia and across the world.

CLEAN UP AUSTRALIA’S MISSION STATEMENT:

To inspire and work with communities to clean up, fix up and conserve our environment.

Other key campaigns they support include:

Clean Up Mobile Phones – Under this scheme, you can arrange the free return of your mobile phone for safe re-use or recycling. Why not collect the old office mobile phones and encourage everyone in your workplace to bring theirs from home!

Cash for Containers – A Cash Deposit Scheme is currently in place in South Australia and as a result their recycling rate of cans and bottles is around 75-85% (other states average less than 40%).

Say NO to Plastic Bags – We use over 10 million new bags every day that results in about  3.76 billion bags or 20,700 tonnes of plastic dumped into landfill sites across Australia every year – or 429,000 bags every hour! If you need to bag it, return your plastic bag to the supermarket for recycling.

If you can’t make it along to a Clean Up Event this year, there are loads of Environmental Events you can support in your local community.

For us, thinking green is a core part of our philosophy and culture. At Eminence, we plant a tree for every product sold under our Forests for the Future Initiative. Launched in November 2012, our first year saw an incredible 1.5 million trees planted! In the words of Boldijarre Koronczay, President of Eminence Organic Skin Care:

Our future is dependent on our actions today. We provide natural and organic products that come from the earth. Without these gifts from Mother Nature, we would be unable to produce our quality products. We are committed to protecting our environment and implementing green initiatives and practices to inspire our partners and customers to think about tomorrow, today.

So whether it’s one tree planted, one bag of litter collected, one mobile phone recycled – the combined effort of ‘one’ means the power of many!
Share with us one thing you are going to do to support the environment this year.
